THE APPLICATION OF CARBORUNDUM TUBE FOR THE DETERMINATION OF DECOMPOSITION RATE OF PLANT RESIDUES UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS

Interference by living plant roots is usually found in decomposition studies with no labelled plant materials carried out under field conditions. It has been found that this interference can be completely eliminated by using porous carborundum tubes with pore size, mainly of 140μ×70μ, as the containers for soil and plant material being examined, and the hydro-thermal conditions of the soil inside the tube was identical with or approximate to that outside the tube under submerged and upland conditions respectively. Since it was found that the proportion of addition of plant material within the range of 1—8% of soil didn't affect their decomposition rate under submerged conditions, it is recommended that, in decomposition studies with soils containing 1—2% organic matter, 8% plant materials may be added in order to obtain more reliable results.
