Integrated assessment of ecology and environment of hilly region of red soil based on GIS: a case study in Changsha

The development of remote sense (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) provides an effective means for studies of regional changes in ecology and environment. Aiming at the hilly region of red soil with vulnerable ecosystems, supported by the GIS, this study establishes the environmental information system database of hilly region of red soil, and evaluates the ecological and environmental quality of a typical area in this region, i.e., Changsha city. Based on the database, this study integrates Delphi, AHP and assessment index method of ecology and environment into the environmental quality assessment for the area. The results showed that only 7 per cent of the total land areas (approximately 827.64 km2 ) are maintaining at higher or the highest grades of the ecologi-cal and environmental quality in Changsha city. However, there are 52.4 per cent of the lands (approximately [(6)-184.2(18)]7.14 km2) are get-ting worse or the worst grades of the ecological and environmental quality. This study concluded that the entire ecological and envi-ronmental quality of Changsha city is degrading rapidly due to the highly intensive human activities in the recent years.
