The Neotectonic Movement in the Shuanghu Region,Qiangtang Basin,Northern Xizang

Tan Qinyin Yu Qian Li Minghui(Chengdu Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources,CAGS)
The intense neotectonic movement once occurred in the Shuanghu region,Qiangtang Basin, northern Xizang from the Miocene onwards due to the NS trending stress compression, and may be responsible for the formation of the EW trending anticlines and synclines,EW ,NS ,NE SW and NW SE trending faults, fluvial and lacustrine terraces in the Quaternary strata, and volcanic and seismic activity. The neotectonic movement and resultant plateau geomorphology have experinced two stages of evolution:the Miocene, and Pliocene to Quaternary. For instance,at the beginning of the Miocene, intense NS trending compression in the Qiangtang Basin allowed the Jurassic strata and the strata before the Jurassic to be severely folded and deformed. The differential uplifting of the plateau led to the formation of mountains and gorges. The coarse grained clastic rocks in the Kangtog Formation were immediately accumulated in the intermontane hollows.Till the latest Miocene, the surface was levelled, and the plateau geomorphology began to take shape. The plateau was then near 2000 m above sea level. From the Pliocene onwards, the overall slow uplifting of the Qiangtang Basin continued and reached up to 3000 m above sea level resulting in the formation of the present day plateau geomorphology. Also in this period, the Suona Formation and Quaternary fluvial and lacustrine strata were deposited.
