STUDIES ON THE ECOLOGY OF FOULING ORGANISMS IN THE PINGTAN ISLAND

Huang Zongguo, Cai Ruxing and Xu Youyan (Third Institute of Oceanography, National Bureau of Oceanography)
During the period from 1963 to 1964, the wooden test panels were exposed along the floating wharfside at Pingtan Island (25°29′ N, 119°41′ E) for monthly and quarterly interval, and the biofouling on ships and piles etc. was surveyed. The major fouling organisms on panels are listed in Table 1, the seasons of attachment are illustrated in Fig. and the precent coverage of surface and wet weights per unit time are given in Table 2. There existed a very conspicuous vertical zonation of biofouling on fixed piles (Table 5). The results show that the fouling community on Pingtan Island may be characterized as follows: 1. There are many genera of organisms and greater biomass. 2. The major fouling organisms are eurythermal or warm species such as Bugula neritina, Balanus reticulatus, Enteromorpha spp. and Hydroides elegans etc.
