IDENTIFICATION OF STRONG DISCRETE SOURCES OF RADIO-EMISSION WITH NOVAE AND SUPERNOVAE RECORDED IN THE CHINESE ANNALS

SHYI TZE-TSUNG
Shklovsky listcd six historical supernovac whose positions agreed closely with the positions of six sources of strong radio-emission. Four of these supernovae (185, 369, 1996, 1054 A.D.) were recorded in Chinese annals. Original texts of these records are given in Table 2. The position of the nova of 386 A.D. recorded in China does not coincide with that of the nova given by Shklovsky (Previously given by Lundmark). Instead, it is found that the position of the “comet” of 5 B.C. recorded in Han dynasty agrees much better with that of the radio sources. In Chinese records, comets and novae (including supernovae) were often mixed up. It was thought that Tycho’s nova of 1572 and Kepler’s nova of 1604 were not rc-corded in China. This is not correct. Original texts are quoted to show that both of these supernovae were recorded in China. The supernova of 1203 was also recorded in China. Attempt was made to find in the Chinese records a nova whose position was near to the strong radio source in Crux Australis. This attempt was not successful. Data regarding possible novae have been collected from Chinese annals, and analyzed. The positions are compared with the chart of radio point-sources given in Shklovsky’s book “Radio-astronomy”Eleven novae whose positions are quite near to radio sources are listed in Table 3 for the reference of investigators in this field. 30 other possible novae with their probable coordinates are listed in Table 4. Some of them may he comets. The lists are not at all complete. Investigation will proceed.
