An Analysis of the Separation Between Routines and Free Combat in Wushu

Yu Wanling
Wushu, originally a system of martial arts,is now used for a variety of purposes-perfor-mance in public, health maintenance, self-defence and molding one's temperament. Such develop-ment has stemmed from the needs of social and cultural progress. One salient feature of wushu development is the separation between routines, which are per- formed according to set patterns, and free combats. Since these two forms of wushu practice havedifferent characteristics, they call for different methods of training. Through specialized training, they will undergo steady development, each in its own way. Basically speaking, their separationreflects a leap in the process of cognition about the functions of wushu.
