Findings Report on a Present Survey of Social Sport in China

A public survey on the present conditions of social sport in China was made in 1997 by the State Sport General Administration. The results indicated that in 1996 the sports population took 15.5% among people over 16 years old in both urban and rural areas in China; among the sports people taking part in group sports activities, 74% were old people and the most popular exercises were qigong, setting-up exercises , social dance, wushu and yangge, etc; families that spent no more than ¥100 RMB per year for sports expenditure took 58.3% , and those spent ¥100-200 RMB took 27.8% ; among all citizens'leisure activities sports were the No. three most popular one; 79.8% of the sports fields and gymnasiums were located in down town or suburbs, of which 44.1% were fully open to the society; 65% of people investigated had never heard of the "National Fitness Progamme".
