On Mei Wending and “the Western Science Originated from China” and “Seeking for Foreign Countries' Culture When Local Etiquette is Lacking”

ZHANG Zhao-xin;ZHAO Wan-li;Zhou Enlai School of Government,Nankai University;
"The western science originated from China"and"seeking for foreign countries' culture when local etiquette is lacking"are two kinds of attitudes towards western science among Chinese scholars in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.The former clearly points out that the western science originated from China while the latter does not relate to the origin of the two cultures and only shows a positive attitude towards the western science.Mei Wending is a master in calendar calculation at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty,who has a deep understanding of Chinese learning and western learning.He advocates the thought of"seeking for foreign countries' culture when local etiquette is lacking"during most of his academic career.It is only in his later years after he was summoned into the presence of Emperor Kangxi that Mei Wending mistook political authority for academic authority and began to vigorously publicize the thought of"the western science originated from China".
