EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON SOLAR AIR HEATERS WITH HONEYCOMB PANEL (Ⅰ): THERMAL PERFORMANCE COMPARISON OF SOLAR AIR HEATERS OF DIFFERENT CONSTRUCTIONS

Experimental investigation on several kinds of solar air heaters with honeycomb panel (made of 25μm PC) was reported. The construction characteristics are as follows: Type Ⅰ, the honeycomb panel acts as part of the flow passage. Type Ⅱ,the transparent honeycomb is used as transparent cover. Type Ⅲ consists of two stages, with Type Ⅰ as the first stage and Type Ⅱ as the second. A flat plate solar air heater without honeycomb (Type Ⅳ) was also studied as a reference. The results showed that the thermal efficiency can be increased by using transparent honeycomb panel (The day averaged efficiency of Type Ⅰ is 64% when the rate of air mass flow is 55kg/h and the mean temperature difference between the outlet and inlet air is 31℃). This new kind of solar air heaters can be expected to have a wide potential application in areas such as solar drying and solar heating.
