Effects of Carbon Nanotube on Die Casting ZM5 Magnesium Matrix Composites

Carbon nanotube reinforced ZM5 magnesium matrix composites were prepared by die casting. Effects of carbon nanotubes content on die characteritics and mechanical properties of the composites prepared were analyzed.In addition,effects on grain size and distribution in the matrix alloy were observed by OM(optical microscope),and distribution of carbon nanotubes in the matrix alloy was observed by SEM(scanning electron microscope).The results reveal that trace nano-tubes content can be ignored on effects of forming ability of the alloy.With 1.3% carbon nano-tubes,tensile strength of the ZM5 composites can reach 190MPa,and with 1.1% carbon nano-tubes,elongation of the composites is 6.25%,and with 1.5% carbon nano-tubes,the hardness of the composites prepared reach up to Hv95.2.
