Study on depression and somatized symptoms in patients of general hospital

Objective To compare the clinical characteristics of depressive patients with somatized symptoms and without somatized symptoms in general hospitals.Methods Consecutive outpatients were evaluated with a semi-constructed schedule,HAMD,HAMA,SCL-90 and a self designed investigating form.Patients studied met CCMD-2-R and ICD-10 criteria for major depression.Results The total scores of HAMD and its factor scores of anxiety,somatization,retardation and hopelessness in depressive patients with somatized symptoms were significantly higher than those without somatized symptoms.The HAMA total scores and its factor scores of psychotic anxiety and somatizing anxiety,and the factor scores of SCL-90 including somatization,public relation,depression,anxiety and phobia were also significantly higher in patients with somatized patients.Conclusion The somatized symptoms of depressive disorder in general hospital are not only related to depression but also to anxiety.
