Preparation and Properties of Chitin/Sodium Alginate Blend Fiber

Chitin/sodium alginate blend fibers were prepared via wet spinning by using NaOH/CO(NH2)2 aqueous solution as solvent.The effect of the composition coagulator was studied by investigating the mechanical properties.The results show that the mixed solution containing 10% H2SO4,5% Na2SO4 and 5% C2H5OH is a proper coagulator for chitin fiber,as well as the mixed solution containing 5% CaCl2,1% HCl and 10% C2H5OH is a proper coagulator for chitin/sodium alginate blend fiber.The structure analysis indicates that there is a strong interaction and a certain level of miscibility between chitin and sodium alginate molecules.The best values of the tensile strength of blend fibers,11.99 cN/tex in dry state and 2.47 cN/tex in wet state respectively,were obtained when chitin weight content was 10%.The breaking elongations in both dry and wet state get the best value when chitin weight content was 10%.The best values of the ratios of moisture Absorption and moisture retention of blend fibers were 274.1% and 37.8% when chitin weight content was 40%.
