Study on the properties of poly(lactic acid)/poly(ethylene glycol) blends

PLA/PEG blends were prepared by solution blending.Their mechanical properties,thermal properties and biodegradability were investigated.The results showed that their elongation at break gradually increased with the addition of PEG,but that their tensile strength and their modulus of elasticity gradually reduce with the addition of PEG.At the same time,Tg of PLA / PEG blends decreased,the interaction between macromolecular chains of poly(lactic acid) weakened,their plasticities at room temperature increased.The content of PEG took almost no effect on their melting points.But their melting enthalpy increased with the amount of PEG.Their biodegradation rate would speed up with the addition of PEG because PEG could improve the hydrolysis rate of poly(lactic acid) in the soil.
