A Course on the History of Chinese Culture for Students of English
The English Department of Beijing Foreign Languages Institute has recently offered a new course: A Short History of Chinese Culture. It aims to help students to systematize their knowledge of Chinesehistory and culture, enable them to discuss these subjects in English, and acquaint them with foreign (mainlyBritish and American) conceptions of Chinese culture. In recent decades there has been remarkableprogress in sinological studies abroad and in the comparative study of philosophy, literature, history, lan-guage, the arts, and other subjects of the humanities. This makes such a course almost indispensable to astudent of langauge who, after graduation, wishes to help promote understanding between the Chinese andforeign peoples, or engage in advanced studies in the humanities. Moreover, by refreshing their memory of theglorious past of their great nation, this course may help strengthen students' patriotism and urge them towork with devotion for its future.
