by Ma Guanghui
A contrastiv analysis of linguistic features is made between EFL essays written by Chinese college students and ENL essays written by American college students. The results indicate that the two groups have significant differences in 9 out of 67 linguistic features. EFL essays have relatively more second person pronouns, discourse particles, conjunctions and adjectives while ENL essays are comparatively longer, having more causative subordinations, "THAT" clauses as verb or adjective complements,"THAT" relative clauses, and persuasive verbs. EFL essays show more informational and formal features of solicited essays while ENL essays show the features of involvement, personal affection and postpositional elaboration of nominal information.
