A Tentative Study of Shelleyan and Byronian Aesthetic Avant-Gardism
Zhang Xuchun gained his Ph.D. from Peking University in 1999. Now e is associate professor of English at Sichuan International Studies University. He has published extensively on English Romanticism and the Romantic movement in Modern Chinese Literature, among which the most recent one is ″Aestheticization of Politics and Politicization of Aesthetics″.
As one of the ″five faces of modernity″, aesthetic avant-gardism historically derived from romanticism, the earliest instances of which are Shelley and Byron. The Shelleyian-Byronian version of aesthetic avant-gardism per se is incarnated as literary elitism, utopian futurism and poetic dramatization of their personal life. What is politically significant in it is a Romantic complicity with modern/negative liberty, as is contrasted by the vigorous pursuit of ancient/positive liberty on the part of political avant-gardists.
