Study of the hip bone of Jinniushan Man

Lu Zun’e
ummary A left hip bone will be discussed on this paper, which was found in 1984,at the Jin-niushan Cave site, in Dashiqiao City(former Yingkou County), Liaoning Province, The maincharacter of this hip bone is thick. The iliac ala is lower and broad, the iliac crest shows alight S-shape , the iliac pillar is stronger, and the acetabulum is big and deep. The anteriorsuperior iliac spine is very projecting, joint the anterior inferior iliac spine to form a deepnotch. The superior ramus of pubis is thin but longer, and the obturator formen is big. Allcharacter which were listed above, are similar to the Arago XLIV(BP 450000 year ) fromFrance, the KebaraⅡ(BP 55000 year) from Isreal,as well as the Laishui Man(BP 60000year) from North China, but different from Liujiang Man(BP 40000 year) and morden man.Its special character is that the iliac tuberosity is not on the top of the iliac pillar, but back-ward 30mm. By the other hand, there is a deep pit(22mm× 16mm)between the top edge ofthe acetabulum and bottom of iliac pillar. Both the Arago XLIV and Laishui Man are with thesimilar pit,While the Kebara Ⅱ ,Liujiang Man and morden man do not have the same charac-ter. During the evolution of the pelvis of early man,the hip bone of the Jinniushan Man wason the way of transition. Some characters of the hip bone of Jinniushan Man are similar toLaishui Man, but different from the Kebara Ⅱ, which propably resulted from the regionaldifference. The comparison of above shows that the evolutionary pace of the pelvis of early man wasvery slow in the Middle Pleistocene, but by the begining of Late Pleistocene, the whole pro-cess of the evolution of early man’s pelvis ended very fast. According to the study, the Jinniushan Man should be a young woman just mature, butnot a man old than thirty years.
