Validation of TEM-4 Writing;Analytic Rating Scale:Multi-facet Rasch Measurement

The new analytic rating scale for TEM-4 writing module is empirically-developed and revised based on the related experts.For the purpose of validating the scale,18 raters were involved to evaluate 35 writing scripts from TEM-4(2007) original papers.Analysis of the scores was undertaken by using an item response theory model-Multi-Facet Rasch Measurement.The results indicate that the new rating scale was able to distinguish between different levels of writing ability of the examinees,and that raters used the scale in a consistent and consensus way though there were significant differences of severity of raters' applying rating scale and some bias in the interaction between raters and examinees as well as raters and rating scale.The new scale on the whole can be valid for TEM-4 writing testing.
