The New Syllabus and Cultural Elements in English Teaching

Shi Guoqiang Wangyu
It is required by the new syllabus that attention should be paid to the enhancement of English majors’ ability in their cross\|culture communication, and that in terms of cultural differences emphasis should be focused on the cultivation of their sensitivity, tolerability and flexibility. This requirement is an indication that the relationship between language and the cultural messages it carries has been recognized by the English teaching community and English teaching, based on the traditional segmentation of words、sentences and paragraphs, is moving to a stage of combining traditional approaches with cultural messages. Attempts and proposals are also made in this paper to demonstrate how sensitivity, tolerability and flexibility are applied in teaching practice.
