Translation Unit in Chinese-English Translation

GUO Jian-zhong (College of Foreign Languages, Xixi Campus, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310028, China)
Translation unit is a crucial and controversial problem in translation theory and practice. Diverse opinions have been proposed on the way of segmenting utterances, ranging from morpheme, word, phrase, clause, sentence, paragraph to text from the linguistic point of view. Functional approaches try to establish functional translation units, and scholars of Translation Studies take "the culture" as translation unit. The author of this paper holds that the problem of translation unit should be dealt with on a sound theoretical basis and that the pair of languages concerned should be taken into consideration. What's more, the segment should be easy for analysis and operation. So far as Chinese-English translation is concerned, the author proposes paragraph as the ideal unit for analysis and operation in translation.
