A Study on the Collection of The Book of Songs

The collection of The Book of Songs has at least gone through three major compilations: the first was at the time of Xuan Emperor of Zhou dynasty, and the songs collected were those used in rituals and therefore called “the songs proper.” The second was at the time of Ping Emperor of Zhou dynasty, with the addition of “Bian Ya” and “San Wei.” To the third “Bian Feng” and the odes of Lu and Shang were added, and it was compiled by Confucius personally.
