EFFECTS OF GYNOSTEMMA PENTAPHYLLUM ( THUNB ) MAKINO HYPOMNESIS OF THE AGED AND THE VISUAL EVOKED POTENTIAL

A double-blind placebo-controlled trial was carried out to investigate the effects of Gynostemma Pentaphyllum ( thunb ) Makino on the memory of the aged. The results were as following: 1. Memory Quotient of those in treatment group was significantly raised after twelve weeks' treatment, 2 . Latency of wave Pt and interpsek latency of P1- P2 of visual evoked potentials were also significantly prolonged after treatment, which suggested that the visual information was processed more detailly in visual cortex. 3. Contrary to many other reports, Hb, RBC and WBC decreased and BUN increased in a few subjects in treatment group.
