The Ground Fissures in Xi'an, Shaanxi

Liu Guochang (Xi'an College of Geology)
Xi'an is situated in the compound location among the large four tectoni-cal systems which are Qilian-Luliang epsilon -type latitudinal tectonic, the Neo-cathaysiau structral system and the Longxi structural system. Ground fissures are divided into "old qround fissure" and "new ground figure" according to the ages o?them. The fissure formed before 1950's is called "old ground fissure" and that formed after 1950's "new ground fissure" .There are three old ground fissures and ten new ones.lt is shown by the relation between "old ground fissure" and faults that the " new groung fissure" can be inferred to be inflection of fundamental fracture movement in ground layer. The "new ground fissure" was gradually formed after a long time wriggle, not reached at a single leap.As to the fracture movement, it depends upon the direction of the main pressure. According to the feather lines of the ground fissures and the sawtooth form of the tensile fissures, the main pressure direction of the fissures is NF-NEE.Will an earthquake occur there under the main pressure? It is reckoned "considerable violent earthquake will probably happen in the confluence of Weihe and Chanhc faults, and it will also take place in the compound location of Lintong-Changan and Chanhe faults. If an earthquake occurs, the houses and roads in the place where fissures pass will be destroyed. So all the new buildings should be built 15m to 50m apart from the ground fissures.
