Climatic Aridity and Its Effect on Ecological Environment in Hanjiang Valley of Southern Shaanxi

Based on the atmospheric temperature records from 1953 to 2000, precipitation records from 1961 to 2000 and the average and the largest flow of Hanjiang River records from 1961 to 1999 of Hanjiang Valley of southern Shaanxi, the following conclusion has been made about the analysis of meteorological and hydrologic data. Firstly, the annual rainfall is decreasing. Secondly, yearly rainfall is not even, showing an increase in summer and decrease in autumn. Thirdly, the surface run-off is decreasing, too. Lastly, the heaviest rainfall is also decreasing. All these tendencies are becoming more and more remarkable. The ecological environment in this area is worsening, affected by the arid climate. Many disasters have frequently occurred and soil erosion tends to be more serious.
