Effects of Extrusion Deformation on AZ31 Mg Alloy Microstructure and Properties

Effects of extrusion deformation on microstructure and properties of AZ31 Mg alloy are studied by using 500T extruder. The results show that the microstructure of extruded AZ31 Mg alloy is characterized by metal deformation shear bands and α-Mg recrystallized equiaxed crystals. Extrusion deformation can fine the grain of Mg alloy and increase its properties remarkably. With an increase in extrusion ratio, the extent of fining grain intensify and the size of grain changes from as-cast d400 μm to extruded d12 μm, and hence the yield strength and brinell hardness increase, while the elongation tends to decrease monotonously as extrusion ratio is more than 16.
