Objective To investigate the suppressive effect of gypenosides (GP) on mice bearing advanced S 180 sarcoma and erythroleukemia cell line K 562 . 180 sarcoma, the ratio of tumor necrosis area (TNA) to tumor total area (TTA), infiltration of immunocompetent cells in the peripheral areas and within the tumor, and the spleen of the tumor bearing mice. Cell culture was made to observe the inhibition of GP on the growth of K 562 cells. Results The repeated experiments showed that GP could strongly suppress the growth of S 180 sarcoma, resulting in the increase of the ratio of TNA to TTA, lymphocytes and macrophages infiltrating in the peripheral areas and especially within the tumor, the spleen weight and the quantity and size of splenic white pulp of the tumor bearing mice. At the same time, GP could strongly suppress the growth of K 562 in vitro. Conclusion The antitumor effect of GP is mainly through directly killing tumor cells. Immunocompetent cells also play a certain role in this aspect.
