A Suitable Method for Transferring Information Between CFD and CSD Grids

Coupling CFD/CSD is foundation of analyzing nonlinear aeroelasticity. It is very important to choose a coupling CFD/CSD interfacing algorithm that is of high precision, smooth, strongly robust, easy to use and highly efficient. This paper presents and illustrates a new interpolation method for transferring displacement and force data between fluid and structural meshes in a fluid structure interaction simulation. The method is a local interpolation method, and does not rely on whole information from the structural model. Sections 1 and 2 contain: (1) establishment of new FEFN (finite element four node) interpolation scheme(section 1); (2) analysis of effectiveness of FEFN interpolation scheme for transferring information between CFD and CSD grids(section 2); (3) evaluation of the exchange of displacement and force data between fluid and structural meshes for two numerical examples: a cylinder and a wing (section 2); (4) comparison with the infinite plate spline (IPS) method(section 2). Results show that FEFN method gives a more realistic representation of the recovered surface as compared with IPS method. Therefore it is ideal for coupling CFD and CSD.
