Objective To investigate the impact of community-based methadone maintenance treatment(MMT)on sexual behavior and condom use among heroin addicts in Xichang county of Sichuan province. Methods From May to July 2004,a community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect data of socio-demographics,sexual behavior and condom use in the last month among drug users.Associations of MMT with sexual behavior and condom use in the last month were analyzed.Result Of the total 346 heroin addicts investigated,30.4%(105/346)were receiving methadone maintenance treatment and the median treatment duration was 49 days. Both of the Chi-square and multivariate logistic regression model showed that MMT was independently associated with increased sex with regular sex partners in the last month(OR,2.61;95%CI,1.43~4.75),but with decreased sex with casual sex partners in the last month(OR,0.35;95%CI,0.16~0.74),and with increased consistent condom use with casual sex partners in the last month(OR,21.0;95%CI,3.25~135.87)among heroin addicts, respectively. Conclusion The study results showed that methadone maintenance treatment was effective in reducing HIV high risk sexual behaviors among heroin addicts in the first group of pilot sites.
