Effects of Salivae Miltiorrhizae Bge on GSH-Px/MDA ratio and collagen production in human fetal hepatocytes cultures

The mechanism of collagen synthesis inhibition in cultured human fetal hepatocytes pretreated by salviae miltiorrhizae Bge. (SMB) were studied by determining the concentration of type Ⅲ procollagen (PC Ⅲ ) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in culture medium and hydroxyproline (Hyp) in hepatocytes as well as the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). The collagen synthesis of hepatocytes were stimulated by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 ) precedently. A significant decrease in production PC Ⅲ, Hyp and MDA. and significant increase in GSH-Px activity were observed in the cultures pretreated with 1 mg/ml of SMB for 4 hours. The results showed that SMB may inhibit collagen synthesis of cultured human fetal hepatocytes stimulated by CCl4.
