A PRELIMINARY STUDY ON THE HERITABILITY AND COMBINING ABILITY OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS IN HYBRID RICE

The male-sterile lines used in this study were(Gam)Min-Zao 1A,(Gam)Chao-Yang 1 A,(WA)Chao-Yang 1 A,(WA)Zhen-Shan97 A,(Gam)V 20A,(Gam)Fr-Jiu-Ai 7 A,and restoring lines wereTai-Yin 1,Tai-Guo-Dao,IR 24,Gu 223,IR 110-20.These materialsconstituted an incomplete diallel cross of 6×5.We estimated the heri-tability and combining ability of 16 characteristics:plant height,ratesof tillering,panicle per plant,number of grains per panicle,full grainsper panicle,percentage of empty grains,percentage of half empty grai-ns,grain weight per plant,weight of 1000 grains,date of heading,length of grains,width of grains,length/width of grains,transparenceof grain endosperm,protein content and percentage of brown rice.Themain results are as follows:1.Concerning the most characteristics of hybrid rice F_1,it isfound that the general combining abilities of sterile lines and restoringlines play a more important role as compared with their specific com-bining abilities.2.There is a great difference between the influence of the sterilelines and that of the restoring lines on the hybrid rice.As to the es-timation of general combining abilities of 16 characteristics of hybrids,we have primarily found out the effect of the sterile lines and resto-ring lines on the formation of characteristics.3.In the hybrid rice,however,each characteristic is influencedby three combining abilities:the general combining abilities of sterilelines and restoring lines,and specific combining abilities of combina-tions.We call these three abilities as“total combining ability(t.c.a.)”,and on its basis we can calculate heterosis.4.The heritability of each characteristic of hybrid rice is just likethat of the common rice.In this experiment,the heritabilities of pani-cles per plant,grain weight per plant,rate of tillering and proteincontent are lower,and the heritabilities of weight of 1000 grains,dateof heading,length of grains,length/width of grains,transparence ofgrain endosperm and percentage of brown rice are higher.The heritabi-lities of such characteristics as plant height,number of grains per pa-nicle,full grains per panicle,percentage of empty grains,percentageof half empty grains,and grain width etc.are moderate.
