Gu Zifen Feng Chaonian Zhou Meixue Ji Cheng (Jiangsu Agricultural College,Nanjing,Jiangsu Province)  
In 1981 and 1982,the process of increase of grain weight in 4 differentvarieties(types)of barley was investigated.It was found that the processesof strong-and weak-grains were different among varieties.1.For the strong-grain,the relationship between the filling rate ofgrain Weight and the number of days after heading may be fitted by thesame logistic equation,irrespective of the varieties.For the weak-grain,however,the relationship in different varieties must be described by logi-stic equations with respective parameters.2.According to the characteristics of the process,barley varietiesmay be distinguished as follows:A—synchronous type,H.distichum,in which the process of increaseof strong-grain is in coincidence with that of weak-grain.B—asynchronous type,H.vulgare,the process of strong-grain doesn'tcoincide with that of weak-grain.B_1—slow increase of weak-grain in early ripening stage,loose spikelettype of H.vulgare.B_2—rapid senescence of weak-grain ia late ripening stage,dense spikelettype of H.vulgare.The above-mentioned charactersitics are shown not only under normalgrowing condition,but also at conditions such as spike-shading,leavescutting and cutting-off a part of spikes.It may be ascertained that thedistinctions embody the general idea in biology.3.When the condition is changed,the weak-grain of B type will showthe more adjustable capacity on the weight.
