STUDIES ON QUALITY AND OTHER AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF HYBRID WHEAT WITH T.TIMOPHEEVII CYTOPLASM——1.Heterosis and Combining Ability

Using 12 F_1 made by crossing 2A-lines(male sterile line with T.timopheevii cytoplasm)with 6 R-lines(restoration line)and their parents,the heterosis and combining ability of quality and other agronomic cha-racteristics were studied for two years,with the purpose to providetheoretical basis for the selection of parental material in hybrid wheatprogram.The result was as follows:(1)Heterosis over mid-parents was the highest in grain protein con-tent per mu,grain yield per mu and grain wt.per spike ranking thesecond and the third,followed by grain yield per plant,1000-kernelwt.and stature.The heterosis of other characteristics was rather low,but a high negative heterosis could be observed with the date of heading.(2)A complementary effect could be observed between parents withhigh g.c.a.and those with low g.c.a..The relationship between g.c.a.and s.c.a.is uncertain,nor is that between the level of parental charac-teristics and g.c.a..A better parent should,therefore,be one thathas a high level of the important characteristics,high g.c.a.and highσ~2s.c.a.(3)The expression of heterosis is related not only to g.c.a.ands.c.a.but also to the level of parental characteristics and other factors.(4)The conception of specific gluten sedimentation was used for thefirst time.It was expressed by the quantity of sedimentation volume offlour which contains 1 g.dry gluten(ml/g)。
