MULTIPLE REGRESSI0N PROCEDURE F0R THE GENERATION MEAN ANALYSIS

The least square multiple regression procedure is a simple and easyprocedure for generation mean analysis. With this procedure we can notonly estimate each gene effect, but also calculate its sum of squares andvariances. What is more,this procedure in terms of matrix is convenientfor computer calculating. The idea of decomposing the genetic variation among generations inthis analysing procedure conforms to biological process of inheritance.Therefore, it is not simply a fixed statistical pattern. The research on epistatic variance and corresponding SS percentageshowed that epistatic variation accounts for about one third of the gene-tic variation of ear length, number of spikelet per ear and number ofears per plant. It implies that the epistatic effects can not be ignored atleast in the inheritance of some characters. So, the additive--dominancemodel is not fit for these cases. According to the experimental results, the magnitudes of each geneeffect varies with different parents of the crosses. This situation is co-nsistant with the genetic structure of the populations considered, becausedifferent population deriving from different parents may have differentgene effects and gene frequencies, and so, different genotypic values andgenotypic frequencies.
