By means of leaf-cutting and reducing the number of flowers,therelationship between source,and sink of eleven rice varieties was studiedIt was found that the varieties being used in the study could be dividedinto three types.1.The source-limited type,which was characterized by a large num-ber of spikelets per unit area or by large grain volume.The product ofphotosynthesis of leaves could not meet the requirement of the sink forits filling,thus the percentage of ripened grains was low.The differencebetween strong and weak kernels in the time of grain filling was great。There was a large proportion of substance conveyed from the stem andthe sheath into the sink where,with a high rate,it was changed intoyield.2.The sink-limited type,whose characteristic was that there wereless spikelets than those of the first type,in other words,a small totalcapacity of caryopsis。Therefor,the product of photosynthesis of leavescould completely meet the requirement of the sink for its filling,evenwith some surplus and the percentage of ripened grains was high.Strongand weak kernels started to fill almost at the same time with little di-fference.There was only a small proportion of substance conveyed fromthe stem and the sheath into the sink,where it was converted into yield。3.The source-sink-harmonic type.Its characteristic was that therewas a harmony source-sink relationship and that the percentage of ripen-ed grains was higher than that of the source-limited type but lower thanthat of the sink-limited one。The traits of the filling of strong and weakkernels,the rate of conveyance and the conversion of substance of thestem and the sheath were something between the types mentioned above.Also,the shift of source-sink type were studied in some varieties underdifferent level of fertilities
