Studies on the Relationship between Canopy Apparent Photosynthesis and Grain Yield in High-yielding Winter Wheat

Two winter wheat cultivars were planted in five densities in a well-cultured field forhigh yield to study the relationship between canopy apparent photosynthesis(CAP)rate and grain yield.The results indicated that the CAP rate of winter wheat duringthe entire growth period generally varied according to a single-peak curve,where thepeak value was usually reached arround the time of anthesis.However,there wereminor differences between the different density treatments.The CAP rates of populationswith higher densities usually increased more rapidly before anthesis than those withlower densities,reached the peak values earlier,and then decreased more shapply,indicating that lower density was favorable for the maintenance of the CAP capacityin the later growth period.It was also found that CAP rate was influenced collectively by the states of growthand development of the tillers,LAI and light interception.The CAP rate at the fil-ling stage was highly significantly correlated with grain yield (r=0.7843~(**))and1000-kernel weight(r=0.9962~(**)).Therefore,the enhancement of the CAP rate or theprolongation of the CAP duration during the filling stage could lead to increase ingrain yield.
