Effect of Water Deficit Stress on the Stomatal Frequency, Stomatal Conductance and Abscisic Acid in Rice Leaves

The results of the experiment showed that: a. The stomatal frequency in newly emerged rice leaves increased and the appearance of the maximum value was delayed under water deficit stress (WDS); b. There were two peaks of stomatal frequency on the leaves of the control and the WDS-3 d treatment, but only one peak on the leaves of the WDS-5 d treatment; c. The length of the guard cells was shortened as WDS became more serious, and changes of their length were greater at the middle of the leaves than at the top or the basal parts; d. The stomatal conductance decreased under WDS and recovered quickly after rewatering, and the speed of recovery varied with cultivars; e. The abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation in leaves of the Japonica cultivar Yanjing 2 was higher than both the indica cultivar IR661 and the Indica-hybrid Shanyou 63 under high leaf water potential, but the sequence was reversed under low water potential; f. The critical leaf water potential for ABA quick accumulation in leaves was about -0.2 MPa. The relationship between ABA accumulation under different water status and the drought resistance of cultivars is also discussed.
