Effects of Elevated CO_2 on Photosynthesis and Antioxidative Ability of Broad B ean Plants Grown under Drought Condition

Broad bean plants ( Vicia faba L.)grown in open top chambers were us ed to assess the effects of elevated atmospheric CO 2 and drought on photosynth esi s, transpiration, water use efficiency and antioxidative enzymes of leaves. Elev a ted CO 2 (700 μmol mol -1 ) enhanced plant height, photosynthetic rate, st omatal resistance and water use efficiency, whereas decreased transpiration rate . Furthermore, under high CO 2 c on dition, there was no significant difference in the activities o f catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD)and glutathione reductase (GR)as wel l as the contents of chlorophyll, carotenoids and soluble sugar between the wate r stressed broad bean plants and well watered plants, and the activities of pe roxidase was even weaker under water deficit condition. In addition , under high CO 2 condition, the contents of malondialdehyde (MDA)in leaves grown under th e combination of elevated CO 2 concentration and water deficit condition were significantly lower than the leaves grown under water stressed condition. This means that high CO 2 may have amelioration effect on drought induced oxidati ve damage. Namely, elevated atmospheric CO 2 can enhance the capacity of pla nts to resist stress induced oxidative damage.
