In the presence of sodium hydroxide and in water reaction medium, carbamoylethylstarch was prepared by using a semi-dry process. The effects of sodium hydroxide, reaction temperature, reaction time, acrylamide concentration on the reaction efficiency and degree of substitution were studied. When the amount of starch, acrylamide and water are 5.7 g,2.2 g and 2 mL respectively, the optimum reaction conditions are as follows:the sodium hydroxide/anhydroglucose unit molar ratio is 0.32,reaction temperature,60℃,and reaction time,2 h.Under these conditions the degree of substitution is 0.64,the reaction efficiency is 64%.The degree of substitution increases with increasing acrylamide/starch unit molar ratios, the reaction efficiency decreases with increasing acrylamide/starch unit molar ratios.
