An introduction to study on quality of life and measurement scales

FANC Ji-qian, WAN Chong-hua, SHI Ming-li, et al. (Department of Medical Statistics, Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences, Cuangzhou 510089, China)  
The development and evolution of the concept of quality of life(QOL)is firstly introduced. The current status and problems on the studies of QOL are reviewed. The application of QOL in six fields of health care is summarized, including measuring of health condition in general or special populations, assessing QOL of the patients suffering from cancer or other chronic diseases, comparing the scheme of clinical treatments, evaluating the projects on preventive intervention and health care, policy - making on allocation and utilization of health resource and exploring the main factors concerned with health care. At last, nine well - known scales of QOL are introduced.
