The extracellular matrix of the sternocleidomastoid muscle in the congental muscular torticollis: a histochemistry study

Objective To investigate the changes of extracellular matrix, including collagen and glycosaminoglycans, of the sternocleidomastoid muscle in CMT in quantity, and the relationship with the etiological mechanism.Method Collagen and GAG of the sternocleidomastoid muscle of thirty CMT and five non-CMT children's samples were studied by histochemistry, including Masson trichome and Alcian blue stain with critical electrolyte concentration.Result The quantities of collagen and GAG of the sternocleidomastoid muscle in CMT were higher than those in control groups, and the difference was significant (P 0.01).Conclusion The fibrosis of the sternocleidomastoid muscle in CMT might be due to the increases of collagen and GAG in quantity.
