Effect of chronic low back pain on exercise training and its correlated factors in national woman rowing athletes

Liu Bo, Ye Jia-jun, Lu Huai-min Department of Rehabilitation, Hospital of Orthopedics, Chengdu 610041, Sichuan Province, China
AIM: To investigate the effect of chronic low back pain (CLBP) on training of national woman rowing athletes and explore its correlated factors. METHODS: Forty-three woman athletes with mean age of (23±4) years were selected in January 2004, winter training for the Olympics. The training included load squat, power clean, bench pull, prone push, kettle-bell lifting, load abdominal muscle crunch, 5 000 m dynamometer exercise, 12 kilometers long stroke, and 5 000 m long run and so on. The subjective sensation was investigated with the psychological social adaptation questionnaire for athletes, the exercise results were measured with 5 000 m dynamometer, the case rate of CLBP in woman athletes was diagnosed by the standard of back pain, and the pain degree was evaluated by visual analogue scale and traditional pressing detection. RESULTS: All the subjects were involved in the result analysis without drop. ①Distribution of CLBP: There were 23 athletes out of 41 ones appeared back pain with the case rate of 56%. The time was 5 months to 5 years, with an average of (2.42±1.6) years. There were 13 athletes with supraspinal ligament injury, 13 ones with lumbar fasciitis, 3 ones with prolapse of lumbar intervertebral disc, 2 ones with lumbar 3 medial syndrom, 1 with lumbar disturbance of joint. ②Results of 5 000 m dynamometer and psychological social adaptation questionnaire for athletes: CLBP could influence at different levels daily life, training, psychological and social adaptive ability and completion of exercise of the athletes. The results of 5 000 m dynamometer showed that the scores of athletes without CLBP were significantly lower than those with CLBP [(1 129.62±39.14, 1 105.11±30.92) seconds, P 0.05]. ③Correlated events of training were obviously affected by CLBP: Age and training time were negatively correlated with the training, which meant the older the athletes and the longer the training time, the more effect of CLBP on training. While psychological and social adaptive ability and CLBP were positively correlated with exercise training, which meant the less the effect of CLBP on training, the more the amount of exercise completed. Little effect of CLBP on psychological and social adaptive ability had little effect on training. CONCLUSION: CLBP can affect to some extent exercise training, completion of amount of exercise; psychological and social adaptive ability and CLBP are positively correlated with exercise training, while age and training time are negatively correlated with the training.
