Path of the Economic Structural Changes and Industrial Upgrading in Japan

HUANG Fu-sheng1 WEI Feng-chun2(1.Central University of Finance and Economics,Beijing,100081,China;2.China Securities,Co.Ltd.,Beijing,100010,China)
This paper studies Japan's post-war economic cycles. We find similarities between the current Chinese economic situation and that of Japan in the 1970s,during which period Japan shifted to a mass consumption society, with a decreasing contribution of capital, labour and TFP to economic growth. The Japanese government adjusted its industrial policies to facilitate the upgrading of manufacturing sectors,in response to the economic structural changes. This comparative study concludes that China should speed up progress towards a shift of government role as well as industrial upgrading, expand domestic consumption, and avoid excessive virtualization of economy.
