Wang Wenli Su Zhuojin Lin Junhong Cheng Jiarui (United Ground Engineering Consult Shareholding Co. Ltd. ) Wang Taidian Huang Caihui ( Civil Engineering Research Institute, Taiwan University)
On 21st, September 1999, a serious earthquake on a Richard scale of 7. 3 happened in the middle of Taiwan, which results in more than two thousand people dead, many houses collapsed and large quantity of public facilities damaged. It is considered that tunnels get little influence since it is in deep underground. However it is discovered that many tunnels have been damaged at different extent after the earthquake. In this paper, damage of more than 40 mountainous tunnels in middle part of Taiwan are analyzed reviewing the influence of earthquake on tunnels in fault, over - wall and bottom wall as well as other zones, which can be taken as a reference for tunnel maintenance and anti-seismic design.
