A STUDY OF OCCUPATIONAL INJURY MORTALITY INA COAL MINE

Duan-mu Binru, et al. Hospital of occupational Diseases, West China University of Medical Sciences
This article reports the resuhs of a study of occupational injury mortality in a coal mine. The cohort studied consisted of 3555 male workers and covered a period of 17 years (1972, 1, 1 to 1988, 12, 31). The data from past records were analyzed by means of SMR and the latter was compared with the national stuandardized mortality rate. The results showed that the cohort had a SMR of 1.52 (95% CI 1.17~1.94, 64 observed). The mortality of the cohort changed during the period studied. The mortality for the former period (1972, 1, 1 to 1979, 12, 31) was 186/10~5 and 63/10~5 for the latter period. This was probably the result of preventive measures, including promulgation of a government safety code, local safety training, regular cheek-ups of machinery, and better skill of workers, etc., which were strictly enforced during the latter period. This study also showed that emphasis on reducing death injury should be laid on the cutters section of the production process.
