Study on the Isolation and Drug Resistance of Staphylococcus aureus in Food during the Last 4 Years

Objective This study aimed to understand the contamination of Staphylococcus aureus in food in the local area and the changes of its drug resistance feature during the past four years, thus to prevent food poisoning due to Staphylococcus aureus contamination and to provide the basis for clinical treatments. Methods A total of 603 samples were collected from 11 kinds of food from 2008 to 2011. Microbial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were conducted according to GB/T 4789, 10-2008. Results A total of 75 stains of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from 603 samples and the detection rate was 12.4%, of which MRSA accounted for 34.7%. The detection rate of Staphylococcus aureus decreased from 18.1% in 2008 to 6.9% in 2011. The detection rates in raw meat products, cold drinks and cold vegetable dishes remained high(21.2%, 20.2% and 20.0% respectively). The drug susceptibility test results showed that in the past four years, resistance rates of penicillin, erythromycin and tetracycline have risen from 75.0% to 97.0%, from 42.0% to 75.0% and from 32.0% to 62.0%, respectively. Resistance to levefloxacin, second generation quinolone and gentamicin have also risen to varying extents. The resistance rates of rifampin, nitrofurantoin and minocylin were below 5%. No resistance to vancomycin and teicoplanin was found. Conclusion Contamination of Staphylococcus aureus in food in our local area remained to be a serious problem, especially in raw meat products and cold drinks.The drug- resistance spetrum of Staphylococcus aureus in food has widened year by year and the drug resistence rates are rising all along. The first clinical treatment options are sensitive drugs.
