Analysis on monitoring results of plague in Honghe prefecture of Yunnan province from 1996 to 2005

Objective The aim of this study was to analyze the plague epidemiological characteristics in Honghe Hani and Yi autonomous prefecture, in order to provide scientific basis for plague prevention and control work. Methods From 1996 to2005 in Honghe Hani and Yi autonomous prefecture, plague monitoring data, report, investigation of epidemic plague cases and plague prevention and control work summary statistics and epidemiological analysis were studies. Results In Honghe prefecture from 1996 to 2005, a total of 9 counties(cities), 46 townships(towns) and 166 villages reported animal epidemic of plague. There were 8 counties(cities), 37 townships(towns) and 113 villages had human plague epidemic, and the plague epidemic was persistent and obvious seasonal. The incidences involved 196 people, and the cases were bubonic plague. The infection involved both men and women with no significant gender differences. The age was from 0 to 40 years old(63.78%).Students and young adults, farmers were the most common populations, and the incidences were mainly in mountainous areas.Animal hosts were analyzed and 150 strains of Yersinia pestis were detected. 122 strains of Yersinia pestis(81.33%) were from medium animal ectoparasite, 5 strains of Yersinia pestis were from x. cheopis and 4 strains of Yersinia pestis(80%),confirmed the main host and Xenopsylla cheopis were in Honghe prefecture plague natural foci and the main media position.Conclusion A serious form of plague epidemic was reported in Honghe prefecture, It is suggested to combine the epidemiological characteristics, and take effective measures to prevent and control the occurrence and epidemic of plague.
