The Origin of the Little Theater Movement; Antoine and His Theatre Libre

The foundation of Theatre Libre in the late 19th century marked the coming of a new phase in French theatre history, and meanwhile initiated the worldwide little theater movement. This paper analyses the historical background of Antoine' s theatrical reform,and then presents its innovative spirit of theatrical aesthetics, its beneficial experience in theatrical management and its current significance.
