GLOBAL PRECEDENCE IN THE EARLY PERCEPTION OF CHINESE CHARACTER RECOGNITION

Guo Xiaochao (PLAAF Institute of Aviation Medicine, Beijing)
infrequent Chinese characters of 7, 10 or 13 strokes, either left right or top down structured with two components were selected. Two types of targets, a whole character of 64×64 dots or a character like component in it, were used in the perceptual identification task to probe into the relationship of global processing with local processing in the early perception of Chinese character recognition. Global precedence effects were found in all spatial frequency conditions. The whole character was identified much better and faster than its components regardless of spatial frequency content of visual patterns, and the performance of component identification in the next higher spatial frequency condition was found to be the same as that of whole character identification in suprathreshold levels. It was demonstrated that the perceptual identification of Chinese characters was advancing on the basis of similarity judgment and matching. Although the early perceptions of a Chinese character and its components shared the same linear processing of visual spatial information, different ways of stimulus target matching, whole to whole for whole character and part to part for its components, were used by subjects in the present study. The shift of perceptual processing from the global to the local of visual patterns made better performances in whole character identification than in its components, and the richer configurational information carried by lower spatial frequencies made it much easier to identify the whole character than its radicals generally detailed by higher spatial frequencies which were relatively inadequate in the 0 3.0 cpd spatial frequency band studies.
