An Experimental Study of the Validation of the Constraint Relaxation Theory in the Process of Insight Problem Solving

Dou Donghui,Wo Jianzhong (Institute of Developmental Psychology,Beijing Normal University,Beijing,100875)
We examined 135 senior high school students' performance in solving the T Puzzle problem under different cues. The results showed:(1)The Constraint Relaxation Theory had its validity in explaining the mechanism of insight problem solving, and that in general, subjects who experienced more failures were more sensitive to crucial information.(2)At the specific phase, subjects' operating performances did not show an increased figure. This phenomenon provided a convincing evidence that the mechanism of constraint relaxation was restricted by the representational hierarchical complexity,so it represented a steady increase-stagnation-sudden-move feature.
