An Investigation on Status Quo and its Influencing Factors of Contemporary Postgraduates' Emotional Intelligence in China

Emotional intelligence refers to an intelligence which performs emotion. Affective diathesis refers to the one's relatively stable and basic positive emotional psychological characteristics developed under the combination of heredity and environment, including the identity layer of affection and the operational layer of affection. Based upon the theory of affective diathesis, emotional intelligence belongs to the operational layer of affection.The "Situational Questionnaire on College students' Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire" is an effective tool to measure college students'(including graduate students) emotional intelligence. The questionnaire has four factors, including emotional understanding ability, emotional expression ability, self-emotional regulation ability, others-emotional regulation ability. Emotional understanding ability refers to the ability of perception, recognition and evaluation of others' emotions; emotional expression ability refers to the ability to express one's emotions through language, expression and actions appropriately; self-emotional regulation ability refers to the ability to regulate and control their own emotional state consciously; others-emotional regulation ability refers to the ability to regulate and control others' emotional state consciously. The questionnaire was administered to 10056 graduate students, including masters and doctors. The geographical regions encompassed welldeveloped, developing and less-developed regions in China involving 51 colleges and universities of 14 major cities(Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Changchun, Zhengzhou, Xi'an, Wuhan, Xining, Lanzhou, Guiyang, Nanning, Haikou, and Kunming).The results showed:1 On the whole, the emotional intelligence of graduate students in China was positive, but the ability of emotional expression was weaker than the three other emotional abilities. And the emotional understanding ability of graduate students decreased gradually from the undergraduate period. 2 The factors affecting the emotional intelligence development of the graduate students were from four aspects: individuals, families, schools and society. The main factors affecting the emotional intelligence were "school climate", "online purpose", "public concern", "selfdemanding" and "parenting style".(1) The main factors affecting the emotional understanding ability were "parenting style", "family climate" and "school climate".(2) The main factor affecting the emotional expression ability was "public concern".(3) The main factor affecting the emotional regulation(self-emotional regulation and others-emotional regulation) ability was "online purpose".This investigation has supplied crucial first-hand information for educators on how to improve the emotional intelligence of graduate students as well as for academics on the theoretical implications for emotional intelligence research.
